Abstract
Objectives: The cause of obesity is known as overeating, lack of excercise, genetic factor, metabolism, mental and social economic factors. Since modern society is getting more complex and the tensions among social members getting intensified, psychological factor becomes more important than before. With this reason, Relationship between stress and BMI(Body Mass Index)?waist circumference was observed.

Methods: The survey was performed in 59 pre-menopausal women from 25 to 44 year-old who visited a oriental medical clinic in Kangnam-ku, Seoul. Height and weight were measured conducted using electronic instrument. To measure stress score, BEPSI (Brief Encounter Psychosocial Instrument)-K was used.

Results: 1. BMI and waist circumference showed significant correlation with BEPSI-K score. correlation coefficience of BMI and waist circumference with BEPSI-K score was r=0.342(p<0.01), r=0.331(p<0.05).
2. The regression coefficient of BEPSI-K score on BMI was 1.540 (t=2.746, R2=0.117), indicating the stastical relevance of the two factors(p<0.01). A simple linear regression analysis of these data yielded following equation; BMI = 19.0 + 1.540¡¿BEPSI-K score(R2=0.117)
3. The regression coefficient of BEPSI-K score on waist circumference was 3.113 (t=2.651, and R2=0.110), indicating the stastical relevance of the two factors(p<0.05). A simple linear regression analysis of these data yielded following equation;
BMI = 67.2 + 3.113¡¿BEPSI-K score(R2=0.110)

Conclusions: There was a significant relationship stress(BEPSI-K score) with BMI and waist circumference. As BEPSI-K score increased, BMI and waist circumference were significantly gained. This stastical results prove that rising stress contributes to increase of BMI and waist circumference, which indicating that strss functions as an important factor in women obesity. More considerations on stress and obesity thought to be needed in treatment of obesity.
